Elevations on Original Sin: 6, on other passages where is explained the tyranny of death

Remember that death does not take long; know the law of the sepulcher, and nothing will make you forget it. It is written on all the tombs, and in all the world: whoever is born will die of death.

It is a law established for all men to die once; and after will come the judgment.

The dominion was given to the devil over all mortals throughout their life: he held captive under the terror of death all those who live enslaved by this hard law.

These are two terrible servitudes brought to us by the dominion of death. We can not have rest under its tyranny: at every moment it can come, and not only to overthrow all our designs, to disturb all our pleasures, to rob us of all our possessions, but what is still infinitely more terrible, to lead us to the judgment of God.

We are for these two reasons in an eternal and insupportable subjection: we can only leave by Jesus Christ. He who believes in him will not be judged; he who does not believe in it is already judged. His sentence is upon him, and at any moment she is ready to execute.

Such are the effects of Adam’s fall and original sin. How can we recover? That’s what we have to say now.
